(O'FALLON, Ill., Jan. 13) – The McKendree University men's D1 hockey team falls to Maryville University 1-2 at home in Midwest College Hockey (MCH) play.
The Bearcats fall to 0-2 overall in the season.
After back and forth action to start the game, both teams ended the first period with no goals on the board.
Five minutes into the second period, Maryville jumped on the board first with a goal. The Bearcats answered back less than three minutes later and scored a tying goal. Senior
Ryan Reader (Granite City, IL/Granite City High School) sent a pass in front of the net to junior
Oliver Joensson (Malmo, Sweden/Kitas Gymnasium-Gothenburg), burying it past the Saints goalie. The game remined even for the rest of the period, with both teams going into the third period 1-1.
The Saints scored the game winning goal with seven minutes remaining in the third period. McKendree fought until the last second to even out the game. Junior goalie,
Wes Werner (LaSalle, Ontario, Canada/Sandwich Secondary School) made 44/46 saves in the loss. With no other goals being made during the period, Maryville captured the 2-1 victory over McKendree.
The Bearcats will return to the ice on January 22 & 23 in a double-header against Waldorf University, hosted at McKendree Metro Rec Plex.
