(O'FALLON, Ill., Jan. 22) – The McKendree University men's D1 hockey team won 6-2 over Waldorf University on Friday night at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex.
A minute and a half into the game, the Warriors took the lead with the first goal. After some back and forth action, the Bearcats tied the game with only 40 seconds left on the clock. Senior
Aleksy Ivasenko (Riga, Latvia/Riga 1 Distance Education High School) found the back of the net with assists from captain
Daniel Nordlander (Göteborg, Sweden/Wasaskolan Tingsryd) and junior
Oliver Joensson (Malmo, Sweden/Kitas Gymnasium-Gothenburg). The score heading into the first intermission was 1-1.
Freshman
Brad Richardson () netted a goal four minutes into the second period.
Shayne Pluto (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Central Memorial High School) and
Lucas Brown () were credited with assists. In the final two minutes, the Warriors tied out the score 2-2 heading into the third period.
Shortly into the final period, McKendree gained back the lead. Freshman
Jesper Lundqvist () scored a power play goal with the help of
Adam Dempski (St. Charles, MO/Francis Howell North HS). With 14 minutes on the clock, freshman
Kirill Proskurin () pushed the lead to 4-2 following a pass from Lundqvist. Then just two minutes later, the Bearcats scored twice in 20 seconds.
Lucas Brown () scored the first with help from Richardson and Nordlander. Ivasenko scored the other, his second of the game, connecting with
Trevor Roehrig () and
Ryan Radke (Cave Creek, AZ/Cactus Shadows High School). McKendree held the lead for the remaining 12 minutes, winning 6-2.
The Bearcats will look for a sweep tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 pm.
