FREMONT, Neb. – The McKendree University D-I men's hockey team opened a two-game weekend series here Friday evening against Midland University with a 2-1 setback to the Warriors at Midwest College Hockey action at Sidner Arena.
With the setback, McKendree falls to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the MCH, while Midland improved to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the league.
After a scoreless first period that featured a total of 32 shots on goal as Midland had 21 shots on goal and McKendree had 11 shots on goal.
The Bearcats would hold a 1-0 after two periods thanks to a goal just 10 minutes into the second period by junior forward
Cory Robinson (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central). Robinson's goal was assisted by junior forward/defenseman
Ryan Radke (Cave Creek, Ariz./Cactus Shadows).
Midland, though, scored two goals in a span of two minutes late in the third period to earn its first win of the season. The game winning goal, which came with 4:13 left in the game was scored by Kolten Wright off assists by Ayrton Cornic and Phil Liakakos.
The Warriors first goal came with 6:19 left in the final period as Ryan Donovan scored off assists by Ondrej Blaha and Wright.
For the game, McKendree was outshot, 61-31 as the Warriors took a total of 44 shots in the opening two periods.
Neither team had a power play opportunity in the game.
Junior
Kayne Pasquet (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan/Peacock Collegiate) played all 60 minutes in goal as he stopped 59 of the 61 shots he faced and allowed two goals, while Midland's Jaden Gardner had 30 saves and allowed just one goal.
The teams will conclude the two-game weekend series with a 7:30 p.m. game on Saturday, Oct. 2.
