O'FALLON, Ill. - McKendree University men's d1 hockey narrowly dropped its Thursday night contest, 3-2, to the visiting ninth-ranked Maryville Saints at the McKendree Metro Rec Plex. The Bearcats came back after going down 2-0 part way through the second period before firing its first goal. McKendree pushed the game to OT before conceding the game-winner in the first overtime period. The Bearcats get right back on the ice with a pair of games at Illinois State on October 28 and 29.
McKendree went down by one score in the first period, as the Saints found a gap to gain the advantage in the outing. Maryville then tacked on a second goal just over half way into the second period of play, going up 2-0 over the Bearcats.
McKendree continued to fight with a first score coming from freshman forward
Jonathan Davenport, who fired the shot , gliding it past the Maryville goaltender. The Bearcats entered the third and final period down just one score, 2-1. Davenport was assisted by senior defenseman
Ryan Radke and freshman forward
Rycol Davis.
In the seventh minute of the third period, the Bearcats knotted the game up at two goals each off a face-off. McKendree's second and game-tying goal came directly off a face-off with the Saints via junior forward
Karsten Portell.
The game-tying score was the final goal of regulation with the game going into overtime.
Maryville and McKendree went back-and-forth over the short-lived overtime period as the Saints scored just over a minute into the first OT period.
Freshman
Dylan Dallaire held the net for the Bearcats in the contest for full time, grabbing 42 saves on 45 shots by the Saints.
