CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The McKendree University men's tennis team picked up an impressive 6-1 victory over NCAA Division I Austin Peay State University at the Governors Tennis Courts on the APSU campus.
With the win, McKendree improved to 7-0 on the season, while Austin Peay State falls to 3-3 on the year. The 7-0 start is the best for the Bearcats in the school's Division II era, which began during the 2012-13 school year.
In Tuesday's win, Austin Peay would collect its only point of the match in doubles as they won two of three doubles match to earn the first point of the match.
The Bearcats opened the match with a win at the No. 1 doubles spot as junior
Leonardo Frederico (Tujucas-Santa Cantrina, Brazil/UniCesumar) and graduate student
Boriss Kamdem (Ghent, Beligium/Tulsa) picked up a 6-2 win over APSU's duo of Anton Damberg and Thiago Nogueira.
APSU, though, would win the next two doubles matches as they picked up identical 6-4 wins at both the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots.
Meanwhile, in singles action, the Bearcats rallied to sweep all singles matches to earn the victory.
McKendree would pick up its first singles win at the No. 1 spot as Frederico improved to 8-3 on the season following his 6-0, 6-3 win over Oliver Andersson.
The Bearcats took a 2-1 lead in the match following a win at No. 3 singles from sophomore
Subash Paramasivan (Chennai, India/National Institute of Open Schooling) as he earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Tom Bolton. The win by Paramasivan was his fifth straight and improved his record to 6-1 on the season.
Kamdem would give the Bearcats a 3-1 lead following his hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles over Damberg. The win improved Kamdem to 7-2 on the season in singles.
The Bearcats would clinch the match victory with a win at No. 4 singles by sophomore
Julappagari Anurag Reddy (Dubai, UAE/CBSE School Nationals) as he defeated Giovanni Becchis in three sets. Reddy lost the first set, 6-3, before rallying to win by identical 6-4 scores in the second and third sets.
With the match already clinched, the Bearcats would then pick up wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to conclude the clean sweep in singles play.
Junior
Lorenzo del Biondo (Pescora, Italy/Abraham Baldwin) would pick up a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles over Hogan Stoker, while sophomore
Nanase Ebisu (Osaka, Japan/Hawai'i Pacific) earned a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 6 singles over Nogueira.
The Bearcats will continue its Spring Break Road trip on Friday, March 18 with an 11 a.m. non-conference match in Kansas City, Mo., against 47th-ranked Northwest Missouri State.
