Boriss Kamdem Makes History, Becomes First Bearcat to Earn GLVC Men's Tennis Player of the Week Honors

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – McKendree University graduate student men's tennis player Boriss Kamdem (Ghent, Belgium/University of Tulsa) made history on Tuesday afternoon as he became the first-ever Bearcat men's tennis player to earn a Player of the Week honor from the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Kamdem, who is ranked No. 52 in singles in NCAA Division II men's tennis, earns this week's GLVC Men's Tennis Player of the Week after posting two wins each in singles and doubles to help lead the Bearcat men to back-to-back wins over nationally-ranked opponents Rockhurst (No. 28) and Harding (No. 48) last weekend.

For the week, Kamdem went 2-0 at No. 2 singles and 2-0 at No. 1 doubles playing with junior Leonardo Frederico (Tujucas-Santa Cantrina, Brazil/UniCesumar).

Kamdem began the weekend with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Rockhurst's Agustin Cortes and then posted a win at No. 2 singles over Harding's Arthur Bellan, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2). With his two singles wins, Kamdem improved to 10-2 in singles on the season, including 7-1 at the No. 2 spot. In addition, Kamdem has won four straight matches at No. 2 singles.

Meanwhile, in doubles, Kamdem and Frederico won their eighth and ninth straight matches this past weekend to improve to 11-1 on the season in doubles. The Bearcat duo opened the weekend with a 6-2 win over Rockhurst's No. 1 doubles team of Joe Harris and Brian King and then picked up a win over Harding's No. 1 team of Bellan and Dani Ortiz.

Kamdem's play helped the Bearcats post a 5-2 home win last Saturday over 28th-ranked Rockhurst and then the Bearcats earned a hard-fought 4-3 win last Sunday at 48th-ranked Harding.

The Bearcats, who are currently sporting a 9-1 record on the season, are scheduled to return to action on Friday, April 1 with a 4 p.m. match in St. Louis, Mo., against NCAA Division III No. 4 ranked Washington University in St. Louis. Following the WashU match, the Bearcats will open GLVC play with a 2 p.m. match on Saturday, April 2 in Lebanon, Ill., against Illinois-Springfield and then hosts Webster University for its Alumni Day match on Sunday, April 3 at 1 p.m. in Troy, Ill., at Triad High School.
