Women's Tennis Falls at Home Friday to No. 44 Southwest Baptist

O'FALLON, Ill. – The McKendree University women's tennis team suffered a 4-0 setback here Friday afternoon to 44th-ranked Southwest Baptist in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match at the St. Clair Tennis Center.
 
With the setback, McKendree fell to 6-8 overall and 0-4 in the GLVC, while SBU improved to 10-7 overall and 4-0 in the GLVC.
 
The teams began Friday's match by playing doubles and in doubles, SBU earned the doubles point by winning at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The match at the No. 1 spot was not completed after SBU sealed the doubles points. SBU was winning the match at No. 1 doubles, 4-2 over junior Viola Cipriani (Arezzo, Italy/Liceo Classico Francesco Petrarca) and sophomore Camilla Fonseca (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Colegio Saber). SBU's No. 1 team of Paula Ballestreros and Diana Cabrera is ranked 23rd in Division II.
 
Following the completion of doubles play, SBU would seal the match win victories in singles at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 singles.
 
The win singles win for SBU came at the No. 1 spot as Cipriani fell in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) to Cabrera, who is ranked 61st in Division II singles.
 
Ballesteros would give SBU a 3-0 lead in the match following her win at the No. 2 spot over Fonseca. Ballesteros defeated Fonseca, 6-4, 6-1.
 
The final singles point came at the No. 3 spot as sophomore Rhyan Cook (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) fell 6-2, 7-5 to Elsa Pascual to seal the match win.
 
Once the match was sealed, the singles matches at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 were left unfinished as both No. 4 and No. 5 singles matches were tied at 1-1, while the No. 6 match had yet to begin.
 
McKendree will return to action on Saturday, April 16 with an 11 a.m. match in Evansville, Ind., against Southern Indiana.
