Women's Tennis Battles in Road Setback to Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The McKendree University women's tennis team concluded the road portion of its regular season schedule here Friday afternoon with a 5-2 setback in Great Lakes Valley Conference action against Lindenwood at the Lindenwood Tennis Courts.
 
With the setback, McKendree fell to 7-10 overall and 1-5 in the GLVC, while Lindenwood improves to 8-6 overall and 2-4 in the GLVC.
 
The Lions and Bearcats opened Friday's match by playing three doubles matches and the Lions would secure the doubles point thanks to winning all three doubles matches.
 
Lindenwood opened the match with a 6-2 win at the No. 3 spot as Natalia Cordero and Juliana Kulczynski defeated McKendree's duo of sophomores Maria Vitoria Salomao (Minas Geralds, Brazil/Belo Horizonte) and Emily Kettering (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community West).
 
The Lions would secure the doubles point with a 6-4 win at the No. 1 spot as junior Viola Cipriani (Arezzo, Italy/Liceo Classico Francesco Petrarca) and sophomore Camilla Fonseca (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Colegio Saber) fell to Lindenwood's top team of Fernanda Poblete and Paula Sostres Pico.
 
Lindenwood completed the doubles sweep with its 6-4 win at No. 2 singles over junior Mariana Caicedo Mora (Cucuta, Colombia/American International School of Mallorca) and sophomore Rhyan Cook (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North). Mora and Cook fell to 6-7 on the season in doubles play.
 
With Lindenwood holding a 1-0 lead in the match, the two teams turned their attention to singles, the Lions would win four of the six singles matches to win the match.
 
In singles, the Bearcats tied the match at 1-1 after Cook picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 3 singles spot over Minna Kahn. Cook won her second straight match and improved her record to 8-9 on the season.
 
Lindenwood would take a 2-1 lead in the match following a 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 4 spot by Cordero over Salomao.
 
The Lions pushed its lead to 3-1 following a win by Claire Martin at the No. 1 spot as she defeated Cipriani in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. Cipriani fell to 7-9 on the season in singles.
 
Lindenwood would secure the match win following a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 6 spot by Kulczynski over Kettering.
 
The Lions picked up a fifth point in singles following Poblete's win at the No. 2 spot over Fonseca. Poblete needed three sets to win the match as Fonseca picked up a 6-4 win in the first set, while Poblete won 7-5 in the second set to set up a third set. In the third set, Poblete would earn a 6-3 victory.
 
Mora would give the Bearcats their final win of the match as she collected a win in a third-set tiebreaker over Paula Sostres Pico. Mora lost the first set, 6-3, before Pico earned a 6-3 win in the second set to set up a third set tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, both players battled until the end, but Pico was able to prevail following a 10-7 win.
 
The Bearcats will close out the regular season on Saturday, April 23 with an 11 a.m. GLVC match at Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville, Ill.
