Men's Tennis Wins Fifth Straight Match, Concludes Regular Season With Win Over Maryville

BELLEVILLE, Ill. – The 45th-ranked McKendree University men's tennis team closed out one of its best seasons since joining the Great Lakes Valley Conference in 2013 here Saturday afternoon as the Bearcats posted a 6-1 win over 75th-ranked Maryville University at SWIC Tennis Courts.
 
McKendree's win Saturday marked the team's best conference record since joining the league as they 6-1 in league and improved their overall record to 17-2. The Bearcats closed the regular season winning five consecutive matches and 10 of their last 11 matches overall.
 
The 17 overall wins are the most for the program since winning 19 matches in 2013-14. The school record for wins is 20, which was set in both 2010-11 and 2011-12.
 
For just the fourth time this season, the Bearcats won all three doubles matches against the Saints and finished the regular season with a 10-11 record in GLVC doubles matches.
 
McKendree picked up a 6-2 win at the No. 1 spot, a 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot and a 7-5 win at the No. 3 spot.
 
At No. 1 singles, junior Leonardo Frederico ((Tujucas-Santa Cantrina, Brazil/UniCesumar) and graduate student Boriss Kamdem (Ghent, Belgium/University of Tulsa), who are ranked 32 in Division II doubles, improved to 16-4 on the season in doubles with their 6-2 win over Tom Schmitt and Yann Frezouls.
 
Sophomore Subash Paramasivan (Chennai, India/Saraswathi Kendra) and senior Vishnu Prasad (Chennai, India/National Institute of Open Schooling) picked up a 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot over Mario Aleksic and Sebastian Trigosso.
 
The third doubles win came at the No. 3 spot as sophomore Julappagari Anurag Reddy (Dubai, UAE/CBSE School Nationals) and junior Lorenzo del Biondo (Pescora, Italy/Abraham Baldwin College) picked up a 7-5 win over Jose Hernandez and Jack Beuttell-Triggs.

"I'm very happy for all my guys. We finished the regular season strong and now its time to focus on the GLVC Tournament next weekend," said team captain Frederico following the match. "Today was Bo's senior day, and I'm very glad that we got the win. He has done an unbelievable job for this program, we were so lucky to have him here. We have learned so much with him. Thank you Bo."
 
Following doubles play, the teams would focus on singles as the Bearcats would win five of the six matches to earn the match victory.
 
The first win in singles came at the No. 1 spot as Frederico, who is ranked 58th nationally in Division II, picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Mario Aleksic. The win improved Frederico to 18-4 overall and an undefeated 7-0 mark in GLVC singles play.
 
Graduate student Boriss Kamdem (Ghent, Belgium/University of Tulsa) gave the Bearcats a 3-0 lead in the match following his 6-4, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot over Hernandez. Kamdem, who is ranked 45th in Division II singles, improved to 15-5 overall and 5-2 in GLVC singles play.
 
Beuttell-Triggs would give Maryville its lone point in the match as he picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 3 over Paramasivan. Paramasivan closed the regular season with an 11-7 record in singles and a 4-3 mark in GLVC singles play.
 
The Bearcats would then seal the match victory with a win at the No. 4 spot in the line-up by Reddy as he defeated Trigosso, 6-3, 6-1 to improve his record to 15-4 overall and a 5-2 mark in the GLVC.
 
Prasad improved his record to 8-1 in singles with his 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) win at the No. 5 spot over Frezouls.
 
The final win in singles by the Bearcats came at the No. 6 spot as freshman David Leon Mantilla (Lima, Peru/Colegio Parroquial Santa Rosa de Lima) won in a third set tiebreaker over Juan Suero. Mantilla won 6-2 in the first set, before falling 6-3 in the second set to set up a tiebreaker in the third set. In the third set tiebreaker, Mantilla won 10-8 to improve his record 9-4 on the season.
 
With the conclusion of the regular season, the Bearcats will now turn its attention to the postseason as they play this coming weekend at the GLVC Tournament, which is scheduled for April 29-May 1 at the Dwight Davis Tennis Center at Forest Park in St. Louis, Mo.
