TROY, Ill. – The McKendree University women's tennis team concluded its stretch of three matches in three days here Sunday afternoon with a 6-1 victory over Webster University on Alumni Day at Triad High School.
With the win, McKendree improved to 6-6 on the season, while Webster falls to 6-6 on the year.
Playing without its No. 1 player, junior
Viola Cipriani (Arezzo, Italy/Liceo Classico Francesco Petrarca), the Bearcats adjusted its line-up and the adjustment led to the match victory.
McKendree opened Sunday's Alumni Day with the Gorloks by winning the doubles point for the eighth time this season as the Bearcats won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
At No. 1 doubles, sophomore
Camilla Fonseca (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Colegio Saber) and junior
Mariana Caicedo Mora (Cucuta, Colombia/American International School of Mallorca) won 6-1 over WU's team of Erin Brevozar and Bailey Higgins.
Webster would win at No. 3 doubles (6-2) over McKendree's tandem of sophomore
Bailey Grigg (Marine, Ill./Triad) and junior
Anna Marison (Belleville, Ill./Mascoutah), but sophomores
Maria Vitoria Salomao (Minas Geralds, Brazil/Belo Horizonte) and
Emily Kettering (Bloomington, Ill./Normal Community West) partnered at No. 2 doubles and picked up a 6-3 win over Emma Ferguson and Kylie Chitwood and help clinch the doubles point for the Bearcats.
Following doubles play, the teams turned their attention to singles and in singles on Sunday, the Bearcats won five of the six matches as they won 63 of the 78 games played in the match.
The Bearcats started singles play with a win at the No. 3 spot by Mora over Bailey Higgins, 6-2, 6-0 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Fonseca would give the Bearcats a 3-0 lead in the match following her 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Brezovar.
Sophomore
Rhyan Cook (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington North) secured the Bearcats' win following her 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles over Chitwood. Cook improved her record to 6-6 on the season.
Salomao gave the Bearcats its fifth win in singles following her 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot over Ferguson. Salomao improved her record to 7-5 on the season in singles.
Kettering gave the Bearcats their sixth win in singles as she posted a 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 5 spot over Emily Casey. Kettering won her second straight match and improved her singles record to 5-5 on the year.
Webster prevented a Bearcats' sweep in singles as Maddie Mena collected a 6-0, 6-3 win over Grigg at No. 6 singles.
The Bearcats will return to action this coming Friday, April 8 as they host seventh-ranked Indianapolis for a 2 p.m. Great Lakes Valley Conference match at Southwestern Illinois College in Belleville, Ill.
