Men's Tennis Drops Hard-Fought Home Match to 13th-Ranked Indianapolis

No. 45 Bearcats Win at No. 1 and No. 6 Singles and Also at No. 1 Doubles Against Greyhounds

O'FALLON, Ill. – The McKendree University men's tennis team continued Great Lakes Valley Conference play here Friday with a 5-2 setback to 13th-ranked Indianapolis at the St. Clair Tennis Center.
 
The Bearcats, who are tied for 45th nationally in the latest ITA Division II Team rankings, had her five-match win streak snapped and they fell to 12-2 on the season and 1-1 in the GLVC, while UIndy improved to 12-3 overall and 2-0 in the league.
 
In Friday's match, the Bearcats were able to win one of the three doubles matches, but UIndy claimed the doubles point thanks to wins at both the No. 2 and No. 3 spots.
 
The Bearcats opened the match by having its No. 1 doubles team of junior Leonardo Frederico (Tujucas-Santa Cantrina, Brazil/UniCesumar) and graduate student Boriss Kamdem (Ghent, Beligium/University of Tulsa) collect its 12th straight win with a 6-2 victory over UIndy's tandem of Nikolaj Talimaa and Zac Feveri. Frederico and Kamdem, who are ranked 46th in the latest Division II doubles player rankings, improved to 14-1 on the season in doubles.
 
UIndy, though, would come back and win the next two doubles matches as they won 6-2 at the No. 2 spot and earned a hard-fought 7-5 win at the No. 3 spot over McKendree's tandem of sophomore Subash Paramasivan (Chennai, India/Saraswathi Kendra) and senior Vishnu Prasad (Chennai, India/National Institute of Open Schooling).
 
Following doubles action, both teams turned their focus to singles play as the UIndy was able to win four of the six matches to secure the match win.
 
In singles, McKendree's first win came at the No. 1 spot from Frederico as the 67th-ranked singles player in Division II picked up a 1-6, 6-0, 6-0 over UIndy's Edgar Destouet, who is ranked 73rd in Division II singles. Frederico won his fifth straight singles match and improved his record to 13-4 on the season.
 
UIndy, though, would win at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles to take a 4-1 lead in the match. At the No. 2 spot, 59th-ranked Kamdem fell in three sets to 34th-ranked Talimaa, 6-4, 4-6, 4-6. Kamdem's loss was just his fourth of the season as his record fell to 11-4 on the year.
 
Paramasivan would fall in three set at No. 3 singles to 48th-ranked Yoann Viel, 6-4, 2-6, 4-6. The loss snapped Paramasivan's two-match win streak and he fell to 8-5 on the season in singles.
 
Freshman David Leon Mantilla (Lima, Peru/Colegio Parroquial Santa Rosa de Lima) fell in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) to Jason Gerweck at the No. 5 seed.
 
The Bearcats other singles win came at the No. 6 spot as Prasad as he picked up 6-1, 6-3 win over Yannick Zeitvogel. Prasad improved to 4-1 on the season in singles.
 
UIndy's final win in singles came at the No. 4 spot as sophomore Julappagari Anurag Reddy (Dubai, UAE/CBSE School Nationals) dropped a hard-fought match in a third-set tiebreaker to UIndy's Faveri, 6-3, 6-7 (7-3), 11-9.
 
The Bearcats will look to start another win streak this coming Saturday, April 9 as they host Lewis University for a 12:30 GLVC match at Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC) in Belleville, Ill.
