INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Bearcat men's tennis team opened NCAA Midwest Regional play on Saturday (April 30th) morning with the number five team in the nation and the top ranked team in the region with the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds. McKendree's season came to an end with the 4-0 loss to the Greyhounds.
Kicking off the match in the one doubles spot was an ITA top 20 showdown between Leonardo Schmitz Frederico and Benedek Szombathelyi (No. 20) and the Greyhound duo of Edgar Destouet and Tom Zeuch (No. 1). Zeuch and Destouet won the showdown 6-2. UIndy secured the doubles point as Louis Picaud and Nikolaj Talimaa defeated Ryan Fung and Lorenzo del Biondo 6-2.
The Greyhounds went up 2-0 in the match thank to Thomas Mathis' win over Fung in the No. 6 singles position 6-1, 6-1. Benedek had a tough draw taking on Zeuch in the No. 2 singles match with Zeuch being ranked 10th. UIndy took a commanding 3-0 lead with Zeuch's win in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Nikolaj Talimaa clinched the match for the Greyhounds with a 6-1, 6-0 win over del Biondo.
