SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - McKendree University women's tennis played two matches on the road this past weekend, defeating Drury University for the first time in program history 4-3 and falling to No.17 Northwest Missouri State 1-6. The Bearcats are 3-4 overall on the season so far.
Against Northwest Missouri State, McKendree secured two doubles wins. In the No.1 match, senior Camilla Fonseca and fifth-year senior Viola Cipriani defeated Northwest's Carolina Oliveira and Sofia Pignataro 7-6 (7-4). Senior Rhyan Cook and junior Pien Ruempol defeated Laura Prieto Sieiro and Marielena Muench 7-5 (7-5).
The Bearcats faced Drury on Sunday afternoon and defeated the Panthers for the first time since joining the Great Lakes Valley Conference in 2013-14. McKendree secured four singles wins on the day. In the No.2 match, Cipriani defeated Leana Chanove 6-3, 6-3 followed by a 6-2, 6-2 win in the No.4 match by sophomore Iva Poleksic against Antanina Novik. Junior Sofija Djunisijevic posted a 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 victory over Maria Fernanda De la Torre in the No.5 match. Rounding out the vitories for the day was Maria Vitoria Salomao against Eliana Weichel by scores of 6-2, 6-4.
Up next, McKendree travels to Wichita Falls, Texas to take on the University of Texas at Tyler, Cameron University, and Midwestern State University-Texas on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday respectively.
