(ROMEOVILLE, Ill., Nov. 14)- The McKendree University women's basketball team earned a big 64-57 win on the road at NCAA Division II Lewis University.
The Bearcats improved to 5-1 overall and are off to their best start since 2002-03. McKendree will travel to St. Louis, Mo., on Saturday, November 19th to face University of Missouri-St. Louis, their second-consecutive future GLVC opponent, at 1 p.m.
Freshman guard
Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) scored a career-high 23 points for the Bearcats to lead all players, while sophomore guard
Brittany Willis (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) contributed 10 points and narrowly missed a double-double with a team-high nine rebounds.
Both teams traded buckets in the early going and the Flyers held an early 8-7 lead with 14:12 remaining in the first half before McKendree took a a 9-8 lead on a layup by redshirt junior
Ashley Dressler (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge) moments later. Despite five ties in the first half, the Bearcats held the lead for the majority of the half, and led by as many as nine, 31-22, after a layup by Willis with two minutes remaining, but the hosts cut their deficit to 31-25 at the break.
McKendree led by 12 on two separate occasions in the second half, both after three-pointer's by Ponce, and held a 57-47 lead with 4:37 left in the game, only for the Flyers to outscore the Bearcats, 13-0, over the next four minutes to pull within three, 60-57, but Ponce converted all four of her free throw attempts in the final moments to hang on to the victory.
Labrenthia Murdock led Lewis with 13 points, while Lauren Mead and Jess Reinhart each had 12 and 11 points, respectively.
