Bearcat Football Team Drops GLVC Opener at Home to Missouri S & T, 31-0

(LEBANON, Ill., Sept. 15)—
The McKendree University football team made its Great Lakes Valley Conference Saturday evening at home against Missouri University of Science and Technology, with the visiting Miners coming away with the 31-0 victory at Leemon Field.
 
Missouri S & T quarterback Josh Firm threw for 337 yards and four touchdowns, including three to Joseph Hyman, to help the Miners win their GLVC opener. The GLVC is sponsoring football for the first time in 2012.
 
McKendree slips to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in GLVC play. The Bearcats will hit the road for their next two games, beginning with a Sept. 22 tilt at the University of Indianapolis. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. ET (5 p.m. CT) in the GLVC contest. The game will air live on WIBV (102.1 FM) and the Bearcat Sports Network (www.mckbearcats.com) with the pre-game show beginning 20 minutes before kickoff.
 
Sophomore wide receiver Pat Doty (Springfield, IL/Springfield) tied a McKendree team record with eight receptions against Missouri S & T. Doty tied the mark previously set by Brett Gross, who had eight catches in a 1996 contest against Eureka College. Doty had 129 receiving yards against the Miners.
 
Freshman quarterback Isaac Fisher (Washington, IL/Washington), who entered the game in the second quarter for McKendree, completed 20-of-37 pass attempts for 187 yards. Fisher is the younger brother of Austin Fisher (Washington, IL/Washington), who set 22 passing records during a stellar four-year career for the Bearcats from 2008-11.
 
After a scoreless first quarter, Firm tossed two touchdown passes in the second period as Missouri S & T built a 17-0 lead at the intermission. Just nine seconds into the period, Firm hit Hyman with a 51-yard scoring strike for a 7-0 lead. Just over four minutes later, the pair connected on a 29-yard TD pass, which came on a fourth-and-22 play. Adam Peden added a 35-yard field in the final minute of the period to complete the first-half scoring.
 
Firm and Hyman connected once more on a two-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter before Firm hit Clay Kinman with a 30-yard TD pass to close out the scoring.
 
Junior defensive back Michael Romshek (Gibson City, IL/Gibson City-Melvin Sibley) registered a game-high 11 tackles to lead McKendree. Senior linebacker Zach Haselhorst (Trenton, IL/Wesclin) chipped in with 10 stops, while sophomore linebackers Drake Schmudlach (Carthage, IL/Illini West) and Bryce Colvin (East Peoria, IL/East Peoria) each had nine tackles.
