Football Bearcats Look to Bounce Back in Home Opener Against Henderson State

(LEBANON, Ill., Sept. 7)--The McKendree University football team will open the home portion of its 2012 season on Saturday when the Bearcats play host to Henderson State University. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at Leemon Field. 

McKendree will be looking to even its overall record after dropping a 23-13 decision last Saturday at Tiffin University in the 2012 season opener. The Bearcats controlled the clock for more than 20 minutes in the first half, but the host Dragons were able to rally twice and hold on for the win. Senior linebacker Zach Haselhorst (Trenton, IL/Wesclin) was a force on defense for McKendree, posting a game-high 12 tackles, including 3 1/2 for loss, with a fumble recovery. Haselhorst also picked off a Tiffin pass and returned it 50 yards for the Bearcats' final touchdown of the day.

Junior running back Jacob Wagner (Belleville, IL/Belleville West) paced the McKendree rushing attack with 43 yards at Tiffin, while freshman running back Jeruel Taylor (University Park, IL/Marian Catholic) added 34 yards, including a five-yard TD jaunt late in the first half.

Henderson State comes to Lebanon with a 1-0 record after rolling past Southern Nazarene University in its season opener last Saturday, 63-21. The Reddies piled up 564 yards of total offense on the day, including 384 through the air. Henderson State built a 56-0 lead through three quarters in front of a large home crowd at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium.

This will be the second meeting between the two schools. Last November, Henderson State led 16-0 in the second half before McKendree mounted a rally. The Bearcats pulled within six points late in the game and were driving late before the Reddies held on for a 16-10 win. The teams are also slated to play again next season in Arkadelphia, Ark.
