Steppe Pours in 25 Points as McKendree Men Defeated at No. 11 Indianapolis, 100-66

John Steppe finished just two points shy of his career-high with 25 points at Indianapolis
Box Score (INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Jan. 24)—The host University of Indianapolis Greyhounds shot better than 60 percent from the field – including a 65.5 percent clip in the first half – to register a 100-66 victory over McKendree University in men's basketball action Thursday in Indianapolis.

McKendree senior guard John Steppe (Effingham, IL/St. Anthony) registered a game-high 25 points while junior guard Clinton Happe (Evansville, IN/F.J. Reitz) chipped in with 19 points as the Bearcats slipped to 7-11 on the year and 1-7 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. McKendree will head to Rensselaer, Ind., for a Saturday afternoon GLVC tilt against Saint Joseph's College. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.

Indianapolis, the No, 11-ranked team in the latest NABC/NCAA Division II poll, made eight of its first nine three-point attempts in the contest in building a 50-29 advantage at the intermission. McKendree kept pace from the outside in the first 20 minutes of play, hitting 9-of-21 shots from beyond the arc.

The Greyhounds (14-2, 6-2 GLVC) raced to a 13-3 lead and stretched the margin to 26-12 before McKendree started to chip away at the deficit. The Bearcats scored eight of the next 11 points, capped by a three-pointer from Steppe, to trim the margin to 29-20 with 7:54 left in the half. UIndy responded with a 10-3 run of its own to regain a 39-23 advantage before growing the lead to 21 points at the half. The Greyhounds made 19-of-29 shots in the period.

In the second half, the Greyhounds continued to extend their advantage, UIndy led by as many as 35 points in coasting to the win. The 100 points scored by the Greyhounds matched a season-high, which was first reached on Nov. 16 against Central State University.

Steppe added a team-high seven rebounds along with his 25-point effort. Freshman forward Matt Murphy (Jerseyville, IL/Jersey Community) connected for all 10 of his points in the second half for McKendree, which was facing the Greyhounds for the first time since the 1964-65 season. The teams will meet again Feb. 9 at the Harry M. Statham Sports Center in Lebanon.

Quinten Hunter came off the bench to lead Indianapolis with 22 points. Avery Harmon added 11 points and Jared Grady knocked down 10 points – each in a reserve role – for the Greyhounds. The Bearcats were able to limit Reece Cheatham – the leading scorer on the season for UIndy at 17.4 points per game – to just six in the contest.
