Box Score (LEBANON, Ill., Jan. 5)- The McKendree University women's basketball team dropped its second Great Lakes Valley Conference game on Saturday to visiting Quincy University 75-56.
The Bearcats fall to 5-5 overall and 0-1 in the GLVC with loss, and will travel to St. Louis, Mo., on Thursday, Jan. 10 to face Maryville University in a conference matchup at 5:15 p.m.
Sophomore guard
Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) led all players with 18 points, while freshman guard
Liz Gilman (St. Louis, Mo./Principia) scored 11 points. Senior forward
Shelby Woelfel (Jerseyville, Ill./Jerseyville) had a team-high 11 rebounds, while senior guard
Leann Voss (Breese, Ill./Breese Central) grabbed three steals. Voss now has 162 career steals and moves into a tie with Haley Klingelhoefer for 10th place on McKendree's all-time steals list.
The Lady Hawks jumped out to a quick 11-3 lead, only for the Bearcats to use a 6-0 run to cut their deficit to 11-9 with 11:19 left in the half. McKendree took a 17-15 lead on a layup by junior guard
Brittany Willis (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) with seven minutes remaining, but the lead changed hands five times before the break, and McKendree found itself down 33-32 at the half.
A three-pointer by Gilman gave the Bearcats their first lead of the second half, and a free throw by freshman forward
Kara Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Principia) put McKendree in front, 41-39, with 14:01 remaining. Quincy answered with a 9-0 run to jump out to a 48-41 lead at the 12:24 mark, and steadily extended its lead to double-digits to pull away down the stretch.
Lucy Cramsey led the Lady Hawks with 17 points, while Kelly Buresh had 15 points. Hannah Weedman and Carly Beebe also had 13 and 10 points, respectively, for Quincy.
