Box Score (OWENSBORO, Ky., Dec. 21)- The McKendree University women's baskeball team scored more than 100 points for the first time since 2008 on Saturday night in a 104-95 victory over Davis & Elkins College at the Fairfield Inn Holiday Classic hosted by Kentucky Wesleyan College.
The Bearcats improved to 6-2 overall and will play the host Panthers on Sunday, Dec. 22 at 4 p.m.
McKendree had five players score in double-figures and were led by senior guard
Brittany Willis (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South)' 26 points. Junior guard
Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) scored 23 points while sophomore
Liz Gilman (St. Louis, Mo./Principia) had 18 points. Sophomore guard
Ashley Klass (Evansville, Ind./Evansville North) and freshman guard
Shannon McGinnis (Niles, Ill./Trinity) each had 10 points, with McGinnis recording a career-high. Sophomore forwardÂ
Kara Johnson (St. Louis, Mo./Principia) also led all players with a career-high 10 rebounds.
The Bearcats only trailed in the fast-paced game for the opening 2:27 of the game. The Senators scored the first bucket of the game, but McKendree answered with the next seven points to take a 7-2 lead at the 16:48 mark of the first half.
A layup by McGinnis at the 12:25 mark gave McKendree its first double-digit lead, 20-9, and extended its lead to 40-20 with 6:36 left in the first half. Two free throws by Klass gave the Bearcats its largest lead, 57-30, with just over two minutes to play but Davis & Elkins cut its deficit to 57-41 at the half.
McKendree led by 20 or more points until the Senators scored on a layup at the 13:45 mark to cut their deficit to 72-54. The Bearcats held on to their double-digit lead until a layup and free throw by Davis & Elkins cut the lead to 90-81 with just over six minutes to play.
The Senators came as close as 96-91 with a minute to play, but McKendree went 8-for-10 from the free throw line down the stretch to hold on for the win.
Jorden Lykes led the Senators with 15 points in the loss.
