Bearcats Can't Recover From First-Half Struggles, Fall At Lewis 62-50

Box Score (ROMEOVILLE, Ill., Feb. 16)- The McKendree University women's basketball team tried to rally in the second half, but came up short on Saturday in a 62-50 Great Lakes Valley Conference loss at Lewis University.

The Bearcats fall to 7-16 overall and 2-13 in the GLVC following the loss, and will host Kentucky Wesleyan College for their final home game of the season on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m.  McKendree will honor its seniors prior to the contest as part of its senior night festivities.

Freshman guard Liz Gilman (St. Louis, Mo./Principia) was the only Bearcat in double figures with 14 points. Senior forward Shelby Woelfel (Jerseyville, Ill./Jerseyville) and senior guard Leann Voss (Breese, Ill./Breese Central) both moved up on McKendree's career record books in the contest. Woelfel blocked her 78th career shot to move her into a tie for eighth place with Suzy Gerler. Voss had two steals to move her into a tie for sixth place all-time at McKendree with Katie Hasheider with 180 in her career.

It was a bad shooting night for the Bearcats in the first half, shooting 18.2-percent (6-33) from the field, including only one three-pointer. A layup by Woelfel at the 17:08 mark had McKendree in the lead early, 4-3, but Lewis controlled the paint in the first half, outscoring the visitors 18-8 in the first 20 minutes of play.

The Bearcats scored 12 points off Lewis turnovers in the second half and was almost perfect form the line, shooting 92.9-percent (13-14) from the charity stripe, but the first half deficit was too much to overcome.

Jess Reinhart led all players with 19 points for the Flyers, while Labrenthia Murdock had 13 points.
