Box Score 2 (FLORENCE, Ala., Feb. 23)- The McKendree University softball team lost the first two games of its 2013 season on Saturday. The Bearcats lost 5-2 to Union University (Tenn.), before losing 10-0 to Shorter University.
McKendree fell to 0-2 on the season and will play Southwest Baptist University at 10 a.m., on Sunday, before playing tournament host University of North Alabama at 2 p.m.
The Bearcats outhit Union, 6-4, in the first game of the day, but couldn't overcome an early deficit to fall 5-2.
Union took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on a two-run homer, and added three runs in the third inning to take a 5-0 lead.
McKendree got on the board in the sixth inning on bases-loaded single to the left side by sophomore outfielder
Erica Johnson (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) that scored junior outfielder
Caitlin Stredde (Pingree Grove, Ill./South Elgin) from third. Senior third baseman
Dana Schulte (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) hit a single up the middle in the next at-bat to score junior second baseman
Ashley Scheffler (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central) and cut the deficit to 5-2.
The Bearcats held Union scoreless in the sixth inning, but couldn't reach base in the bottom of the seventh and fell 5-2.
Sophomore Kelcie Stoszkus fell to 0-1 on the season, pitching three innings and giving up five runs on four hits, with three strikeouts.
McKendree had little answer for Shorter in the second game of the day, only picking up two hits in a 10-0, five-inning loss.
The Bearcats had hits in the first and third innings, but couldn't generate any runs in the loss.
Sophomore pitcher
Susan Goetze (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central) fell to to 0-1 on the season, pitching five innings and giving up 10 runs on 10 hits, while striking out one.
Johnson and Stredde ended the day 2-for-4 and 3-for-7 at the plate, respectively, with Johnson picking up an RBI and Stredde having one run scored.
