Buzzer-Beater By Bellarmine Drops McKendree In Season Ending 71-69 Loss

Box Score (LOUISVILLE, Ky., Feb. 28)- The McKendree University women's basketball team had its season come to a disappointing end on Thursday night on a buzzer-beater by Bellarmine University with 0.4 seconds left to lose 71-69.

The Bearcats finished the season with an overall record of 8-18 and a 3-15 record in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Sophomore guard Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) led all players with 22 points, while her four three pointer's gave her 62 for the season, tying Jacque Clark's school record set in the 2003-04 season. 

Junior guard Brittany Willis (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) and senior forward Shelby Woelfel (Jerseyville, Ill./Jerseyville) each had 18 points. Woelfel was a career-best 10-of-10 from the free throw line and also led all players with 13 rebounds to record the 12th double-double of her career. Fellow seniors Leann Voss (Breese, Ill./Breese Central) and Emily Woodland (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) also played the final game of their collegiate careers on Thursday.

McKendree started the game with 13-0 run to take a 13-2 lead with 12:07 left in the first half, but Bellarmine cut the score to 13-7 with just over 10 minutes until the half.

A jumper by Ponce gave the Bearcats their largest lead of the game, 28-14, with 2:59 left in the half and McKendree went into the break up 35-23.

The Lady Knights outscored the Bearcats 14-4 over the first 5:13 of the second half and tied the game 39-39 following two free throws by Darion Hutchinson.

Bellarmine held its largest lead of the game, 61-52, with 4:19 left to play, but McKendree went 6-of-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to battle back and cut the deficit to 63-61 with 1:06 left to play.

Ponce scored McKendree's next eight points, including a three-pointer that tied the game, 69-69, with 10 seconds left.

Bellarmine's Betsy Goodin hit a runner in the lane with 0.4 seconds left to give Bellarmine a 71-69 lead and the win.

Kylie Brady led the Lady Knights with 14 points, while Goodin had 10 points.
