Box Score 2 (LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 25)- The McKendree University softball team had a rally come up short in game one, and struggled at the plate in game two to drop both games of a doubleheader at Bellarmine University on Thursday, 5-3 and 4-0.
The Bearcats fall to 9-28 overall and 7-22 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, and will close out its season with two doubleheaders this weekend. McKendree hosts Kentucky Wesleyan College on Saturday, April 27, and will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday, April 28 with a doubleheader against University of Southern Indiana. Both doubleheaders are scheduled to begin at noon.
McKendree scored three runs in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to two runs in game one, but were unable to score again to fall 5-3.
The Knights scored all five runs over the first four innings, but the Bearcats rallied in the fifth inning. McKendree started the inning with three-straight singles and got its first run of the game on a fielder's choice by freshman catcher
Marla Schulte (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) that brought in sophomore first baseman
Morgan Schulte (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) to score on an errant throw by the Bellarmine second baseman. Senior third baseman
Madi Exton (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) followed with a single up the middle that scored sophomore shortstop
Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) to make the score 5-2, and
Marla Schulte (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) later scored on a groundout by junior second baseman
Ashley Scheffler (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central) to cut the score to 5-3.
Exton singled to left field with one out in the top of the seventh, but the Bearcats were unable to generate more runs to fall 5-3.
Exton led McKendree at the plate with two hits and an RBI in game one.
The Bearcats only had two hits and lost 4-0 in game two. The Knights scored one run in the first and fourth innings, and plated two more in the fifth. Sophomore centerfield
Erica Johnson (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) and
Morgan Schulte (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) each had singles for McKendree in the loss.
