McKendree Softball Snaps Skid With Doubleheader Split Against Kentucky Wesleyan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (LEBANON, Ill., April 27)- The McKendree University softball team snapped a 10-game listing streak on Saturday with a home doubleheader split against Kentucky Wesleyan College. McKendree dropped game one, 3-0, before winning game two 9-6.

The Bearcats are now 10-29 overall and 8-23 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and will close out their season with a home doubleheader against University of Southern Indiana on Sunday, April 28 at noon. McKendree will honor its two seniors between games as part of senior day.

The visiting Panthers outhit McKendree 11-2 in game one, scoring two runs in the first inning and adding its final run in the seventh inning to take game one 3-0. Junior leftfielder Caitlin Stredde (Pingree Grove, Ill./South Elgin) and junior second baseman Ashley Scheffler (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central) each had a hit in game one, with Scheffler's being a double.

The Bearcats jumped out to an early 4-0 in the first inning and withstood a late rally by Kentucky Wesleyan to take game two 9-6.

A bases-loaded double by sophomore first baseman Morgan Schulte (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) in the first inning scored Scheffler and sophomore pitcher Kelsie Stoszkus (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) to put McKendree in front 2-0. Schulte would later score on a throwing error by the catcher, and sophomore shortstop Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) made the score 4-0 when she scored on a single by freshman catcher Kaiti Bowen (Elliott, Ill./Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley).

The Panthers cut their deficit in half in the third inning with two runs, but McKendree added three runs in bottom of the inning to take a 7-2 lead. Sophomore centerfielder Erica Johnson (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) singled to right center to score Stoszkus from second, and Johnson would later score on a throwing error by the rightfielder. Junior rightfielder Kay Koonce (Greenville, Ill./Greenville) reached on an error by the pitcher and Ponce took advantage to score from third.

Kentucky Wesleyan added two runs in the fifth inning to come within 7-4, but Ponce scored on a groundout by senior third baseman Madi Exton (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) to make the score 8-4.

The Panthers added two more runs in the sixth inning to cut the score to 8-6, but a single by Johnson scored Scheffler from second to take a 9-6 lead. Kentucky Wesleyan started the seventh inning by reaching first on an error, but McKendree did not allow any additional baserunner's and earned the win.

Stoszkus improved to 6-8 overall with the win and had four strikeouts. Six players had multiple hits for the Bearcats in game two, led by Johnson's 3-for-3 effort with two RBI's and one run scored.
