Box Score 2 (LEBANON, Ill., April 28)- The McKendree University softball team ended its season witha split on Sunday, defeating University of Southern Indiana in game one, 6-3, before dropping game two, 5-1.
The Bearcats end their season with an overall record of 11-30 and a 9-24 record in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
McKendree got al the scoring it needed in the second inning of game one, scoring six runs and withstanding a late rally by Southern Indiana to win 6-3.
The game was scoreless in the bottom of the second until a single by junior rightfielder
Kay Koonce (Greenville, Ill./Greenville) scored sophomore first baseman
Morgan Schulte (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) from third to get the Bearcats on the board. Senior third baseman
Madi Exton (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) followed with a single up the middle that brought in freshman catcher
Marla Schulte (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) to make the score 2-0. A single by junior leftfielder
Caitlin Stredde (Pingree Grove, Ill./South Elgin) scored Koonce, and sophomore shortstop
Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) reached on a bunt single that scored Exton and extended McKendree's lead to 5-0. Sophomore centerfielder
Erica Johnson (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) reached on an error by the third baseman and Stredde scored from third to put the Bearcats in front 6-0.
The Screaming Eagles cut the deficit in half in the top of the sixth inning on a three-run home run, but sophomore pitcher
Susan Goetze (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central) held the visitors hitless in the remainder of the game to improve to 6-9 overall on the season.
Stozkus and Mo. Schulte each had two hits in game one, with Schulte also having an RBI and a run scored.
Game two was knotted up 1-1 heading into the final inning, but Southern Indiana plated four runs in the final frame to earn a 5-1 win.
The Screaming Eagles led 1-0 in bottom of the fourth, only for junior second baseman
Ashley Scheffler (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central) to draw a bases loaded walk that tied the game up 1-1.
Southern Indiana went on to score four runs in the top of the seventh to jump out to a 5-1 lead, but McKendree was unable to score to lose game two.
Koonce and Mo. Schulte had the only two hits for the Bearcats in the nightcap, while Scheffler had an RBI.
