Box Score 2 (ROMEOVILLE, Ill., April 6)- The McKendree University softball team dropped both games of a conference doubleheader on Saturday at Lewis University.
The Bearcats fall to 6-19 overall and 4-13 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and will travel to Somers, Wis., on Sunday, April 7 to face University of Wisconsin-Parkside for a doubleheader at noon.
McKendree led 2-1 heading into the bottom of of the fourth inning, but the Flyers scored seven runs over their final three at -bats to earn the 8-2 win in game one.
The Bearcats tied the game 1-1 in the second inning on a sac fly by freshman catcher
Marla Schulte (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) that scored sophomore designated player
Kelsie Stoszkus (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) from third. They later took a 2-1 lead on a solo home run by sophomore centerfielder
Erica Johnson (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin). Lewis went on to score seven runs on seven hits over the remainder of the game to earn the victory.
In game two, the Flyers scored all five of their runs in the first inning and held off a seventh inning rally by McKendree to sweep the Bearcats with a 5-4 win.
McKendree got on the board in the second inning and cut the deficit to 5-1 on a single by freshman designated player
Kaiti Bowen (Elliott, Ill./Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley) that scored Stoszkus from third. The Bearcats scored their second run of the game in the fifth inning on a sac fly by sophomore shortstop
Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) that brought in junior rightfielder
Kay Koonce (Greenville, Ill./Greenville). McKendree had Lewis on the ropes in the top of the seventh, cutting the deficit to 5-4 on a single by
Erica Johnson (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) that scored Ponce and junior rightfielder
Caitlin Stredde (Pingree Grove, Ill./South Elgin), but the Bearcats couldn't reach base in the remainder of the inning to drop game two.
Stredde led McKendree with four hits, including a double and a run scored, on the day, while Johnson had three hits with a home run, a run scored and four RBI.
