Morgan Schulte (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township), in a doubleheader sweep at University of Wisconsin-Parkside.
The Bearcats improved to 8-19 overall and 6-13 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with the wins, and will travel to St. Louis, Mo., on Wednesday, April 10 to face University of Missouri-St. Louis in a doubleheader at 4 p.m
McKendree scored runs in the first and sixth innings of game one and won the game on a two-run homer by Schulte, her first of the day, in the eighth inning.
The Bearcats got on the board in the first inning on a single by Schulte that scored junior leftfielder
Caitlin Stredde (Pingree Grove, Ill./South Elgin). The Rangers took a 2-1 lead in the third inning, but Schulte struck again in the sixth inning with another single that scored Stredde and tied the game 2-2. In the eighth inning, sophomore
Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) reached on a walk and Schulte followed with a home run to left field, her first of the season, to put McKendree in front, 4-2. Sophomore pitcher
Kelsie Stoszkus (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) forced two ground outs and struck out the final batter of the game to earn her third win of the season and seal the game one win.
The McKendree bats stayed hot in game two with 17 hits and an 8-7 win in nine innings to earn the sweep.
The Bearcats got solo homers by Schulte, Stredde, and Stozkus in the first, second and fourth innings, respectivey, and led 5-1 after six innings before Wisconsin-Parkside tied the game with four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Schulte led off the ninth inning with a solo home run, her third of the day, and McKendree added two more runs to lead 8-5 heaidng into the bottom of the inning. Susan Goetze (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central) forced the final two batters to pop out to end the game and earn her fifth win.
Schulte ended the day with five hits, including three home runs, six RBI and three runs scored in the doubleheader.
