Box Score (LEBANON, Ill., Jan. 23)- The McKendree University women's basketball team had three score in double-digits on Thursday night in a 70-65 win over Saint Joseph's College to snap a six-game losing streak.
The Bearcats improved to 7-8 overall and 2-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with the victory, and will host No. 18 University of Indianapolis on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 1 p.m.
Junior guard
Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) scored a team-high 13 points to record the 57th double-digit scoring game of her collegiate career. Sophomore guard
Liz Gilman (St. Louis, Mo./Principia) added 12 points and freshman forward
Emily Pusheck (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) had 11 points. Junior forward
Haeley Kreisel (Warsaw, Mo./Warsaw) just missed out on a double-double with nine points and a seash-high 11 rebounds.
After a slow start by both teams, McKendree found its groove and scored six-straight to jump out to an early 10-4 lead. The Bearcats led by as many as 10 three-times in the first half, but Saint Joseph's battled back each time and only trailed 32-29 at the break.
The Pumas struck first in the second half and tied the game, 32-32, on a three-pointer by Kiki Lyons, but McKendree scored on its next five possessions to the tune of a 15-0 run to jump out to a 49-34 lead. A free throw by Pusheck gave the Bearcats their largest lead of the night, 55-39, with 11:40 left in the half, but Saint Joseph's stayed in the game and scored six-straight to cut its deficit to 64-58 with under 2:30 to play. A three-pointer by the Pumas cut the McKendree lead to 68-65 with 23-seconds left, but Ponce drew a foul with nine seconds left and made both free throws to secure the 70-65 win.
Kiki Lyons led all players with 15 points for Saint Joseph's, while Courtney Kvachkoff and Tonisha Sanders had 12 and 10 points, respectively.
