Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) moved into ninth place on the school's career scoring list and into second on the career three-point list in a 71-61 women's basketball loss to Hillsdale College on Saturday.
The Bearcats fall to 0-2 and will host its home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 18 against Lincoln College (Mo.) at 7 p.m.
Junior guard/forward
Jameeka Bouie (Racine, Wis./Case) led McKendree with 21 points and tied for the team lead with eight rebounds. Ponce scored 16 points to increase her career total to 1,263 points, passing Katie Hasheider's total of 1,258 points set in her career between 2003-07. Ponce's four three-pointer's also upped her career total to 171 to pass Jacque Clark's second-place total of 169 set from 2000-04. Junior forward
Danielle Amann-Stewart (Mascoutah, Ill./Mascoutah) added 12 points and eight rebounds to round out the Bearcat's double-digit scoring.
McKendree started quickly in the contest, hitting its first three three-point attempts to take a 15-8 lead with just under 15 minutes to play in the first half. The Bearcats held onto the lead for the next five minutes, but a 7-0 run by Hillsdale tied the game, 19-19, at the 6:33 mark.
Sophomore guard
Amber Alexander (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) put McKendree back in front, 20-19, with a free throw, but the Chargers used a 10-0 run to build a lead and take a 31-27 edge into the break.
The Bearcats kept things close in the second half and tied the game, 51-51, following a three-pointer by Bouie and a layup by Amann-Stewart on consecutive possessions with 6:33 left in the game.
Hillsdale responded and pushed its lead back out to 60-53, and went 9-11 from the line over the final 3:41 of the game to win 71-61.
Senior forward Megan Fogt led all players with 26 points and 13 rebounds for the Chargers.
