Women's Basketball Heads To Illinois Springfield With Playoff Hopes On The Line

The McKendree University women's basketball team will play its final game of the regular season on Thursday evening in Springfield, Ill.

The Bearcats travel to play University of Illinois at Springfield for a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup at 5:30 p.m. McKendree needs a win to keep its hopes of a berth in the GLVC tournament alive. The tournament begins on Sunday, March 2 at campus sites.

SCOUTING THE PRAIRIE STARS: University of Illinois at Springfield enters Thursday's game with an overall record of 7-18 and a 3-14 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Prairie Stars dropped both its games last weekend, nearly pulling off an upset at No. 15 Lewis, 82-77, in overtime on Thursday, before falling 68-52 at Wisconsin-Parkside on Saturday. Senior guard/forward Megan Bergerud leads UIS with 15.7 points and 3.5 rebounds/game. McKendree is 18-5 all-time against Illinois Springfield, and earned a 71-64 win in the last meeting on Dec. 7, 2013.

GLVC TOURNANMENT SCENARIO: McKendree's tournament hopes are still alive heading into Thursday night. The Bearcats can earn a berth with a win over Illinois Springfield, a loss by Wisconsin-Parkside, and a loss by Rockhurst.

MILESTONE WATCH: Senior Brittany Willis (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway South) is five free throws away from climbing to No. 6 on McKendree's all-time list. Junior guard Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) needs five three-pointers to set a new single-season record at McKendree after tying the record with 62 last season. Ponce also needs six three-pointers to move into third place all-time at McKendree in career three-pointers made. Sophomore guard Liz Gilman (St. Louis, Mo./Principia) needs six 3-pointers to move past Haley Klingelhoefer for seventh-place on McKendree's all-time list.
