Offense Comes Alive In Softball Doubleheader Sweep Over Quincy

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (LEBANON, Ill., March 10)- The McKendree University softball team spread out 23 hits on Monday in a doubleheader sweep over Quincy University.

The Bearcats improved to 2-7 overall and 2-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and will hit the road for its spring break trip in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and will play Arcadia University on Wednesday, Mar. 12 at 9:30 am ET.

McKendree collected 14 hits in game one and withstood a late rally to hold on for a 7-5 win. The Bearcats scored two runs in each of the first two innings, and added three in the seventh inning.

Junior centerfielder Erica Johnson (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) reached on a fielder's choice in the first inning to score freshman second baseman Jamie Doggendorf (Dittmer, Mo./Northwest) from third base for the first run of the game. Junior first baseman Morgan Schulte (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) followed with an RBI single that brought in junior shortstop Kate Mays from third to take a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Hawks tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the inning, the Bearcats regained the lead on a wild pitch that brought in freshman third baseman Hanna Branch (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) from third, and another single by Johnson brought Doggendorf across home plate to make the score 4-2.

Senior leftfielder Caitlin Stredde (Pingree Grove, Ill./South Elgin) hit a deep single with the bases loaded that cleared the bases and push the McKendree lead out to 7-2. Quincy scored three runs to cut its deficit to 7-5, but sophomore pitcher Taylor Barnouski (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) came in and forced a line out and a ground out before striking out the final batter looking to end the game and pick up the save.

Junior pitcher Kelsie Stoszkus (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) improved to 1-2 with the win, and Doggendorf led McKendree at the plate with three hits and two runs scored.

The Bearcats led 9-0 after three innings in game two to cruise to a 9-1 win in five innings.

Junior designated player Lindsay Schmitz (Streator, Ill./Streator Township) got the Bearcats on the board in the first inning with a fly out that scored Doggendorf from third. Junior first baseman Katie Nauman (Amboy, Ill./Amboy) followed by reaching on an error by the leftfielder that scored Mays from third to take a 2-0 lead. Stredde ended McKendree's scoring in the inning with a two RBI single that scored Branch and Nauman to extend the lead to 4-0.

The Bearcats blew the game open in the second inning, scoring single runs on back-to-back bases loaded singles by Johnson and Schmitz, and scored its third run of the inning on a bases loaded walk by Nauman. McKendree scored its final run of the frame on a single by Stredde that scored Schmitz from third to lead 8-0.

Doggendorf tripled in the third inning and came in to score on a ground out by Mays to push the lead to 9-0 after three innings. The Lady Hawks scored in the fourth inning to cut their deficit to 9-1, and had runners on second and third in the fifth inning, but lined out and grounded out to end their scoring chance and the game.

Freshman pitcher Holly Magre (Festus, Mo./St. Pius X) earned her first collegiate win, improving to 1-2 overall, and had two strikeouts in the game, while Stredde and Schmitz each had two hits. Stredde also had three RBI in the win.
