Box Score 2 (MYRTLE BEACH, S.C., March 12)- The McKendree University softball team won two games at the Snowbird Classic to push its winning streak to four-straight on Wednesday.
The Bearcats improved to 4-7 overall and will play Dakota State University (S.D.) and Swarthmore College at 9:30 a.m., and 11:30 a.m., on Thursday.
McKendree trailed 4-3 after the first inning, but took advantage of five errors by Arcadia and rallied to score six runs in the fifth and sixth innings to earn a 9-5 win.
Arcadia crossed home plate four times in the top of the first, but the Bearcats cut the deficit to one with three runs on three erros in the bottom of the inning. Junior centerfielder
Erica Johnson (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) scored the first run from third on an error by the shortstop, and McKendree added two more runs when senior leftfielder
Caitlin Stredde (Pingree Grove, Ill./South Elgin) reached on an error that brought in junior first baseman
Katie Nauman (Amboy, Ill./Amboy) and junior designated player
Lindsay Schmitz (Streator, Ill./Streator Township) to cut the score to 4-3.
Johnson doubled in the fifth ining to score junior shortstop Kate Mays and tie the game, 4-4, and Schmitz followed with a home run to put the Bearcats in front 6-4. An RBI single by freshman rightfielder
Dani Schoenbacher (Tamaroa, Ill./Pinckeyville) later in the inning brought in Nauman to extend the lead to 7-4.
Mayes and Johnson hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the sixth inning and Nauman hit a sac fly to score Johnson to increase the lead to 9-4. Arcadia scored a single run in the top of the seventh, but were unable to close the gap any further to end the game.
Sophomore pitcher
Taylor Barnouski (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) improved to 1-2 and had three strikeouts in the win, while four players had two hits for McKendree at the plate.
The Bearcats scored runs in four of the five innings of game two and cruised to a 16-0 win over Delaware Valley College in five innings.
The freshmen duo of second baseman
Jamie Doggendorf (Dittmer, Mo./Northwest) and third baseman
Hanna Branch (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) combined to go 7-for-7 with seven RBI and four runs scored in the game. Doggendorf was a double short of hitting for the cycle in the game, including an inside the park home run in the fourth inning.
Junior
Susan Goetze (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central) improved to 1-2 overall and had four strikeouts in the win.
