Softball Swept At Wisconsin-Parkside To Close Out Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (SOMERS, Wis., April 27)- The McKendree University softball team fell in both games of a doubleheader on Sunday at University of Wisconsin-Parkside, 11-9 and 13-0 in five innings to end their 2014 season.

The Bearcats finish the 2014 season with an overall record of 17-31 and a 10-24 mark in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

McKendree rallied late in game one, but the seven first inning runs scored by the Rangers was too much to overcome in game one.

Wisconsin-Parkside used a big first inning to take a 7-0 lead, but the Bearcats rallied to tie the game 7-7 in the top of the fourth inning. Senior first baseman Morgan Schulte (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) homered to left field in the second inning, and made the score 7-2 in the third inning on a single by junior centerfielder Erica Johnson (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) that brought in sophomore catcher Marla Schulte (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) from third. Senior leftfielder Caitlin Stredde (Pingree Grove, Ill./South Elgin) drew a bases loaded walk to cut the score to 7-3, and freshman second baseman Jamie Doggendorf (Dittmer, Mo./Northwest) followed with a double to left field that scored all three baserunners to cut the defiict to 7-6. Johnson singled through the left side to birng in Doggendorf and tie the game 7-7.

Wisconsin-Parkside regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth with two runs, but the Bearcats answered the bell again in the sixth on a two-RBI single by junior designated player Lindsay Schmitz (Streator, Ill./Streator Township) to knot the game up 9-9. The Rangers matched McKendree with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 11-9 lead and the Bearcats were unable to reach base in the final ining to fall in game one.

Doggendorf, Johnson and Mo. Schulte all had two hits in game one, with Doggendorf and Johnson having three and two RBI, respectively. Junior pitcher Susan Goetze (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central) fell to 4-9 overall with the loss and had four strikeouts.

McKendree was unable to get the offense rolling with only two hits in game two, and the Rangers used a 10-run second inning to jump out to a large lead and take game two 13-0 in five innings. Johnson and Schmitz each had hits for the Bearcats and freshman pitcher Holly Magre (Festus, Mo./St. Pius X) fell to 3-7 overall with one strikeout in the loss.
