Box Score 2 (LEBANON, Ill., April 5)- The McKendree University softball team rallied to win game one, but came up short in game two in a doubleheader split against Saint Joseph's College on Saturday.
The Bearcats are now 13-17 overall and 7-11 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and will host University of Indianapolis on Sunday for a GLVC doubleheader at noon.
McKendree trailed 3-1 entering the sixth inning, but scored three runs in the inning to take a 4-3 lead and held on to win game one.
Junior first baseman put the Bearcats ahead, 1-0, in the bottom of the first on a double that brought around junior centerfielder
Erica Johnson (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) to score. The Pumas tied the game in the fourth inning and tooke a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning, but McKendree rallied in the sixth to earn the win. A single by senior leftfielder
Caitlin Stredde (Pingree Grove, Ill./South Elgin) scored Nauman from second to cut the deficit to 3-2, but junior shortstop
Kate Mayes (Collinsville, Ill./Collinsville) followed with a single that freshman second baseman
Lohgan Bryant (Danville, Ill./Schlarman) and freshman third baseman
Hanna Branch (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) to take a 4-3 lead. Freshman pitcher
Holly Magre (Festus, Mo./St. Pius X) forced a groundout and two flyouts in the final inning to improve to 3-3 overall. Freshman rightfielder
Jamie Doggendorf (Dittmer, Mo./Northwest), Nauman and Johnson each had two hits in the win.
The Pumas scored four runs in the opening inning, and McKendree cut the deficit to 4-2 in the sixth inning, but was unable to get any closer in a 5-2 loss in game two.
Trailing 4-0 entering the fourth inning, the Bearcats got on the scoreboard with a leadoff home run by Doggendorf to cut the deficit to 4-1. McKendree used the longball again in the fifth inning with a leadoff home run by Branch to come within 4-2. The Pumas homered in the seventh inning to extend their lead to 5-2, and the Bearcats had three ground outs in the seventh to drop game two. Sophomore pitcher
Taylor Barnouski (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) fell to 3-5 with the loss, while six players each had one hit for McKendree at the plate.
