Softball Drops Both Games of Doubleheader To Indianapolis

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (LEBANON, Ill., April 6)- The McKendree University softball team was swept by University of Indianapolis in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Sunday, falling in game one, 7-0, before dropping game two, 10-2, in six innings.

The Bearcats fall to 13-19 overall and 7-13 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, and will host Lindenwood University on Wednesday, April 9 for a doubleheader at 5 p.m.

McKendree was unable to find its rhythm offensively in game one, and only had two hits in a 7-0 loss. Indianapolis, who received votes in the last NCAA Division II ranking, scored runs in each of the first three innings of game one to jump out to a 5-0 lead before adding two more in seventh inning. Junior designated player Lindsay Schmitz (Streator, Ill./Streator Township) and senior leftfielder Caitlin Stredde (Pingree Grove, Ill./South Elgin) each had hits in the loss, while freshman pitcher Holly Magre (Festus, Mo./St. Pius X) fell to 3-4 with the loss.

The Bearcats trailed 8-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, but scored one run to extend the game, only to fall 10-2 after six innings. McKendree cut its deficit to 8-1 in the bottom of the fifth on a passed ball that scored freshman rightfielder Jamie Doggendorf (Dittmer, Mo./Northwest) from third. The Greyhounds added two runs in the top of the sixth inning, only for the Bearcats to score their second run of the game on a wild pitch that scored freshman third baseman Hanna Branch (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) from third. McKendree tried to score on a flyout to right field, but was unable to get around the tag at home to end the game. Four McKendree players had hits in game two, and junior pitcher Susan Goetze (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central) fell to 3-5 overall with two strikeouts.
