Box Score (INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Jan. 22)- The McKendree University women's basketball team battled back from a 16-point first half deficit to lead at the half, but were unable to hold on down the stretch in a 85-79 loss at University of Indianapolis.
The Bearcats fall to 2-14 overall and 1-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and will travel to Rennselaer, Ind., on Saturday, Jan. 24 to face Saint Joseph's College at 1 p.m.
Senior guard
Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) had a season-high 22 points, while sophomore forward
Gabrielle Williams (Minooka, Ill./Plainfield East) and junior forward
Jameeka Bouie (Racine, Wis./Case) added 19 and 16 points, respectively. Ponce's 22 points increased her career total to 1,438 to move her into sixth place on McKendree's all-time scoring list.
The Bearcats faced a 30-14 deficit just under halfway through the first half, only to outscore the Greyhounds 24-7 over the next eight minutes to take its first lead, 38-37, following a three-pointer by senior forward
Haeley Kreisel (Warsaw, Mo./Warsaw). McKendree stayed hot down the stretch and led 47-40 at the half.
The Bearcats held onto their lead until Indianapolis took a 55-53 lead with 14:51 remaining in the game. The remainder of the game featured six lead changes and McKendree had its last lead of the game with 4:40 remaining, but the hosts were a perfect 7-of-7 from the line down the stretch to earn the hard-fought 85-79 win.
