Ponce New Career Three-Point Leader, Bearcats Fall 64-56 To Bellarmine

Box Score (LEBANON, Ill., Jan. 31)- Senior guard Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) became the new career three-point leader for McKendree University women's basketball on Saturday in a 64-56 loss to Bellarmine University.

The Bearcats fall to 2-17 overall and 1-10 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play with the loss and will travel to Rolla, Mo., on Thursday, Feb. 5 to face Missouri S&T at 5:30 p.m.

Ponce led all players with 19 points and was the lone McKendree player in double-figures. Ponce's three-pointer at the 19:50 mark of the second half was the 197th of her collegiate career, surpassing Katie Hasheider's previous career total of 196 set during her career from 2003-07.

The Bearcats faced a double-digit deficit for the majority of the first half, but used a 6-0 run to cut the score to 27-23 with 2:31 left in the first half. Two free throws by Bellarmine before the half made the score 29-23 at the break. Ponce's three cut the deficit to 29-26 early in the second half, and kept it close until the Knights pushed their lead back out to double-digits, 47-36, with 11:34 left in the half. McKendree was unable to get baskets at crucial stretches in the second half to lose 64-56.
