(LOUISVILLE, Ky., Nov. 1)- The McKendree University women's soccer team had its season come to an end on Sunday in a 2-1 double overtime loss at No. 18 Bellarmine University in the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament quarterfinals.
The Bearcats finish the season with an overall record of 8-8-3 overall and made its second appearance in the conference tournament in program history. McKendree last played in the GLVC tournament in 2013.
The Knights got on the scoreboard early in the first half. McKendree had the ball deep in its own territory, but Bellarmine took the ball away and took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Darcy Egan off an assist by Mary Beth Gorham. Despite the early lead, both teams battled for the upper hand in the first half with the hosts holding a slight 6-5 edge in shots.
The score stayed in the Knights favor until
Alyssa Patterson (Troy, Ill./Triad) passed to
Sydnee Carroll (Millstadt, Ill./Belleville West), and Carroll was able to rip a shot from 30 yards out in traffic to the near right post to tie the game 1-1. Carroll's goal was her team-leading seventh of the season, while Patterson's assist was her team-leading seventh of the season. Neither team could find the back of the net through the end of regulation to send the game to overtime.
Bellarmine took the only shot of the first overtime period, which was saved by
Taylor Zerbe (St. Louis, Mo./Trinity Catholic), to send the game to the second overtime. The teams combined for three shots in the second extra period, but Bellarmine ended the game in the 107th minute on a free kick from the left side by Gorham that found the far back post to give the top-seeded Knights the 2-1 win.
Zerbe fell to 8-8-3 on the season with the loss and had three saves.
