Box Score 2 (SAINT LEO, Fla., Feb. 21)- The McKendree University softball team splits its first two games of the season on Saturday on day one at the Saint Leo University Invite.
The Bearcats are 1-1 overall on the season and will play host Saint Leo University in a doubleheader on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET.
McKendree jumped out to a 6-0 lead after five innings in game one on Saturday against Stillman College, but held off a late rally to win 12-7. The Bearcats racked up 14 hits in the game with the first four batters of the lineup combining to go 10-of-18 in the game. Senior outfielder
Ashley Scheffler (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central) and
Erica Johnson (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) both had three hits, with Scheffler having three runs scored and Johnson hitting two doubles and putting up three RBI. Senior pitcher
Kelsie Stoszkus (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) improved to 1-0, striking out two in 6.1 innings pitched, while freshman pitcher
Brooke Gajewski (Kronenwetter, Wis./D.C. Everest) picthed two thirds of an inning and only gave up one hit in her collegiate debut.
The Bearcats only had one hit in their second game of the day, falling to Lynn University 8-0 in five innings in their second game of the day. Scheffler hit a double in the game for McKendree's lone hit. Sophomore pitcher
Holly Magre (Festus, Mo./St. Pius X) pitched 2.2 innings and was tabbed with the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season and had two strikeouts. Senior pitcher
Susan Goetze (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central) pitched 2.1 innings and also had two strikeouts.
