Box Score 2 (SAINT LOUIS, Mo., March 15)- The McKendree University softball team lost both games of a doubleheader on Sunday at No. 4 University of Missouri-St. Louis.
The Bearcats fell to 6-10 overall and 1-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, and will travel back to St. Louis on Tuesday, March 17 for a doubleheader at Missouri Baptist University at 2 p.m.
Game one was a pitcher's duel between McKendree's
Susan Goetze (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central) and the Tritons' Hannah Perryman with both combining to strike out 21 batters. Goetze struck out eight, but gave up a solo home run in the bottom of the first for the only run of the game. The Bearcats were unable to solve Perryman, who struck out 13 batters and pitched her second consecutive perfect game.
In game two, McKendree trailed 1-0 after two innings, but battled back to take a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning. The Bearcats loaded the bases and
Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) singled to score
Erica Johnson (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) from third to tie the game.
Jamie Doggendorf (Dittmer, Mo./Northwest) reached on a fielders choice that brought in
Hanna Branch (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood), and
Kate Mayes (Collinsville, Ill./Collinsville) grounded out to the shortstop, but scored
Marla Schulte (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) to take a 3-1 lead. The Tritons cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the inning, and went on to score five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-3 lead and held on to win.
Ponce and Mayes each had one hit and an RBI at the plate, while Johnson, Branch and Schulte all had one hit and a run scored.
Brooke Gajewski (Kronenwetter, Wis./D.C. Everest) fell to 1-3 in the loss and had four strikeouts.
