Box Score 2 (LEBANON, Ill., March 22)- The McKendree University softball team split a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader against visiting Quincy University on Sunday.
The Bearcats are now 8-14 overall and 3-5 in the GLVC and will host Robert Morris University-Springfield on Monday for a doubleheader at 2 p.m.
McKendree scored the only runs it needed in the bottom of the first inning and held on down the stretch to earn a 2-0 win in game one.
Jamie Doggendorf (Dittmer, Mo./Northwest) and
Kate Mayes (Collinsville, Ill./Collinsville) led off the first inning with back-to-back singles, and advanced to second and third on a throwing error by the Hawks. Doggendorf scored the frist run of the game by stealing home to take a 1-0 lead, and Mayes later crossed the plate on a groundout by
Erica Johnson (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) to make the score 2-0.
Starting pitcher
Kelsie Stoszkus (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) had four strikeouts and improved to 4-1 overall and relief pitcher
Susan Goetze (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central) earned the save with two strikeouts, while the pair limited Quincy to four hits in the opening game of the day. Doggendorf and Mayes each had a hit and a run scored to lead the Bearcat offense in game one.
McKendree rallied late in game two, but couldn't score when it needed it most to lose 6-5.
The Hawks struck first with a homer in the first inning, but the Bearcats knotted the game up 1-1 in the bottom of the inning on a double by Johnson that scored Doggendorf. McKendree went on to take a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on a bunt single by
Hanna Branch (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) that scored Johnson from third, but Quincy scored five runs in the fifth inning to regain the lead 6-2.
Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 6-3, and a single by
Ashley Scheffler (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central) scored Doggendorf to bring the Bearcats within 6-4 with two innings to play. A double by Johnson scored Mayes from second in the seventh inning to cut the score to 6-5, but McKendree was unable to add any additional runs.
Goetze fell to 2-7 overall in the loss, while Johnson had three hits, two RBI and a run scored.
