Box Score 2 (LEBANON, Ill., March 28)- The McKendree University softball team lost both games of a doubleheader to No. 16 University of Southern Indiana on Saturday.
The Bearcats fall to 10-16 overall and 2-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and will host Bellarmine University for a GLVC doubleheader on Sunday at 10 a.m.
The teams combined for only nine hits in game one, but the visiting Eagles used a seven-run sixth inning to take a a large lead and take game one 8-3. Southern Indiana took a 1-0 lead on a lead-off homer in the first inning, but McKendree tied the game, 1-1, in the third inning on an RBI single by Johnson that scored
Rebecca Franke (Trenton, Ill./Wesclin) from second. Southern Indiana regained the lead in the sixth inning with seven runs to take a a 8-1 lead, but the Bearcats didn't go out quietly with a two-run homer by
Hanna Branch (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) that cut the deficit to 8-3, but were unable to add any additional runs to fall in game one.
Kelsie Stoszkus (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) dropped to 5-2 and had two strikeouts in the loss, while Branch led the way at the plate with one hit, two RBI and a run scored.
The Eagles led 6-0 after four innings in game two, and held on through the last three innings to take game two 6-1 from the Bearcats.
McKendree got on the board in the sixth inning on a single by Johnson that brought in Doggendorf to score to cut the score to 6-1, but the Bearcats were unable to add to their score in the loss.
Brooke Gajewski (Kronenwetter, Wis./D.C. Everest) fell to 3-5 overall and had one strikeout in the loss, while Johnson's one hit and RBI led McKendree offensively.
