Box Score 2 (DAHLONEGA, Ga., March 7)- The McKendree University softball team won its first game in extra innings, but lost a close one in game two to split its two games on Saturday at the Captain D's Surf and Turf Classic hosted by University of North Georgia.
The Bearcats are now 2-4 overall and will play two games on Sunday, against Mercyhurst University (Pa.) at 1 p.m. ET, and Lincoln Memorial University (Tenn.) at 5 p.m.
McKendree needed eight innings to earn an 8-7 win over Mercyhurst in game one. The Bearcats took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, scoring single runs on a single by senior outfielder
Ashley Scheffler (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central) and a fielder's choice by senior infielder
Kate Mayes (Collinsville, Ill./Collinsville). McKendree extended its lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second on a triple by Scheffler that brought in sophomore outfielder
Jamie Doggendorf (Dittmer, Mo./Northwest), and later Scheffler came in to score on a throwing error by the catcher.
The Lakers tied the game with four runs in the fourth inning, but McKendree regained the lead, 5-4, in the bottom of the inning when senior outfielder
Erica Johnson (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) hit a sac fly that brought in Scheffler from third.
Mercyhurst answered with two runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-5 lead, but the Bearcats tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a triple by sophomore pinch hitter
Liz Klussman (Washington, Mo./Washington) that scored senior pinch runner
Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) from third.
The Lakers scored in the top of the eighth to again take one run lead, 7-6, but a double by Mayes scored Johnson and Doggendorf to earn the win.
Scheffler had a huge game at the plate with four hits, including two triples, three runs scored and two RBI. Senior pitcher
Kelsie Stoszkus (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) improved to 2-0 and had two strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning pitched.
Game two was scoreless for three and a half innings, but one swing of the bat put things out of reach for McKendree in a 2-0 loss to Wayne State University (Mich.).
The Warriors, who received votes in the latest top 25 ranking, hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. McKendree threatened in the sixth inning, but were unable to score.
Doggendorf and Scheffler each had one hit in the loss, and senior pitcher
Susan Goetze (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central) fell to 0-2 and had three strikeouts.
