Box Score 2 (DAHLONEGA, Ga., March 8)- The McKendree University softball team picked up two wins on Sunday in day two at the Captain D's Surf and Turf Classic.
The Bearcats are now 4-4 overall and will play its final two games at the classic on Monday, March 9, when they play Catawba College at 1 p.m., ET, followed by a game against No. 11 University of North Georgia at 3 p.m., ET.
McKendree needed nine innings to earn a win over Mercyhurst University for the second-straight day, earning a 6-1 victory in nine innings.
The game was scoreless until the Bearcats brought in six runs on six hits. Senior
Erica Johnson (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) reached on a fielders choice that brought in senior
Kate Mayes (Collinsville, Ill./Collinsville) for the first run of the game. Johnson was brought in to score off a single by senior
Katie Nauman (Amboy, Ill./Amboy), and junior
Marla Schulte (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) followed with a double that added two more runs to take a 4-0 lead. A single by sophomore
Jamie Doggendorf (Dittmer, Mo./Northwest) scored Schulte from third and Mayes singled to score freshman
Kyla Haukap (Dawson, Ill./Buffalo Tri-City) for the final run of the inning with a 6-0 lead.
The Lakers scored one run in the bottom of the sixth on a double by Kayla Larson, but she was thrown out while trying to advance to third to end the inning and the game.
Senior pitcher
Susan Goetze (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central) pitched nine innings and had eight strikeouts in the win to improve to 1-2 overall. Nauman led McKendree with three hits and RBI and a run scored.
The Bearcats scored three runs in the second and sixth innings to earn a 8-0 win over Lincoln Memorial University in the second game of the day.
McKendree scored one run in the bottom of the first inning on a bases loaded walk drawn by Johnson that scored Doggendorf. They went on to add three runs in the second inning to build a 4-0 lead. A single by Doggendorf scored senior
Kelsie Stoszkus (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) from third, and single later in the inning by senior
Ashley Scheffler (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central) brought in Doggendorf and freshman
Rebecca Franke (Trenton, Ill./Wesclin). Franke later led off the fourth inning with a triple, and was brought in to score on a single by Doggendorf to extend the lead to 5-0. The Bearcats added three more runs in the sixth inning to end the game in six innings. Johnson reached on a fielders choice that scored Scheffler and Mayes would also score on a throwing error by the pitcher. Sophomore
Hanna Branch (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) singled later in the inning to score Johnson and make the core 8-0 and end the game.
Stoszkus improved to 3-0 overall and had seven strikeouts in the win, while Doggendorf led McKendree at the plate with three hits, two RBI and two runs scored.
