(SPRINGFIELD, Mo., April 18)- The McKendree University softball team was swept in its final conference road games of the season, 7-0 and 3-2, on Sunday at Drury University.
The Bearcats fall to 14-30 overall and 6-20 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and will host Rockhurst University for senior day on Saturday, April 25 at 12 p.m.
McKendree trailed 3-0 after three innings, and tried to rally late, but gave up four runs in the sixth inning to fall 7-0 in game one. The Bearcats had opportunities to produce runs in the game, but left eight runners on base in the contest. Lead-off hitter
Ashley Scheffler (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central) led McKendree with two hits, while
Susan Goetze (Green Valley, Ill./Midwest Central) fell to 3-9 and had seven strikeouts in the loss.
The Bearcats tied game two, 2-2, in the top of the sixth, but a Drury run in the bottom of the ining was the difference in a 3-2 loss.
Katie Nauman (Amboy, Ill./Amboy) put McKendree on the board in the first inning with a single that scored Scheffler from third to take a 1-0 lead. The Panthers answered with two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead, but
Hanna Branch (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) scored on a throwing error by the pitcher in the sixth inning to tie the game up 2-2, only for a homer by Drury in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 3-2. McKendree was unable to rally in its final at bat to fall in game two. Scheffler had two hits again in game two with a run scored and two stolen bases, while
Kelsie Stoszkus (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) fell to 7-7 and had four strikeouts.
