Softball Falls Twice To Visting Rockhurst In GLVC Matchup

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (LEBANON, Ill., April 24)- The McKendree University softball team lost both games of a conference doubleheader on Friday to visiting Rockhurst University.

The Bearcats fall to 14-32 overall and 6-22 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and will host William Jewell College on Sunday, April 26 for a doubleheader at Noon. McKendree will honor its nine seniors between games on Sunday as part of senior day ceremonies.

In game one, the Bearcats trailed 5-1 after three innings, but the Hawks scored four runs in the top of the fourth and went on to take game one 9-1 in five innings. Trailing 5-0 in the bottom of the third, Dani Schoenbacher (Tamaroa, Ill./Pinckeyville) led off the frame with a double, and Rebecca Franke (Trenton, Ill./Wesclin) was hit by a pitch to reach first. A sac bunt by Ashley Scheffler (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Central) advanced both runners, and a groundout by Caty Ponce (Edwardsville, Ill./Edwardsville) brought in Schoenbacher to score for McKendree's lone run of the game. Hanna Branch (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) and Schoenbacher each had one hit in game one, and Kelsie Stoszkus (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) fell to 7-8 overall with the loss.

The Bearcats tied game two, 3-3, in the third inning and added two more runs in the fourth inning, but couldn't score additinal runs down the stretch to lose game two 7-5. McKendree struck first in the game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first, on a fielders choice by Kate Mayes (Collinsville, Ill./Collinsville) that scored Scheffler from third, and another on a single by Erica Johnson (New Baden, Ill./Wesclin) that brought in Mayes from third. The Hawks took a 3-2 lead following the second inning, but the Bearcats tied the game, 3-3, in the third inning on an RBI double by Branch that scored Ponce. Rockhurst regained the lead, 6-3, in the fourth inning, but McKendree cut the deficit to 6-5 on a two-run homer by Mayes in the bottom of the frame. The Hawks went on to score an insurance run in the seventh, and the Bearcats were unable to rally in their final at bat to fall in game two. Scheffler and Johnson each had two hits in game two, while Brooke Gajewski (Kronenwetter, Wis./D.C. Everest) had two strikeouts and dropped to 4-9 overall with the loss.
