(INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., Jan. 23)- The McKendree University women's basketball team was in control from start to finish on Saturday in a 54-51 win at University of Indianapolis.
The Bearcats win made it a sweep of Great Lakes Valley Conference contests for the women's basketball team this week after earning a 60-48 win at Saint Joseph's College on Thursday. This is the first time McKendree has won both games of a conference weekend since joining the league in 2011-12. The Bearcats improve to 9-10 overall and 4-5 in the GLVC, and will host University of Wisconsin-Parkside on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 5:30 p.m.
Senior guards
Kacey Johnson (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence Central) and
Kelsee Ennis (Bloomington, Ind./Bloomington South) paced McKendree in the win with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Johnson had a solid day the the free throw line, making nine of her 12 attempts on the day.
The hosts tied the game, 8-8, halfway through the opening quarter, but the Bearcats stepped up their defense and held them scoreless for the remainder of the quarter. McKendree scored the final seven points of the period to lead 17-8 after one. The Bearcats gained their first double-digit lead of the game, 23-12, on a jumper by junior forward
Emily Pusheck (South Milwaukee, Wis./South Milwaukee) with 6:30 to go until the half, but the Greyhounds battled back to come within six, 27-21, with 3:02 remaining. A jumper by Ennis and a layup by freshman forward
Jordan Morton (Olathe, Kan./Olathe South) pushed the lead back out to double-digits, 31-21, at the break.
The Bearcats held onto their comfortable lead for the entire third quarter, holding their largest lead, 47-32, following a three-pointer by junior guard
Amber Alexander (St. Louis, Mo./Parkway North) with a 1:17 left in the period. Indianapolis went on to cut its deficit to single digits for good with 6:24 remaining in the game, and would cut McKendree's lead down to one, 52-51, with 23-seconds left. A pair of a free throw by Ennis extended the lead back out to 54-51, and a chance to tie for the Greyhounds came up short at the buzzer to give the Bearcats the win.
Princess German led all players with 17 points for Indianapolis.
