Balanced Attack Paces McKendree in 95-76 Loss at Quincy

(QUINCY, Ill., Jan. 9)—The McKendree University men's basketball team wrapped up a brief two-game Great Lakes Valley Conference road trip Saturday afternoon with a 95-76 loss at Quincy University.
 
The host Hawks placed five players in double figures in the scoring column in collecting the conference win over the Bearcats. McKendree moves to 7-5 overall and is now 0-4 in GLVC play. The Bearcats return home Thursday to square off against William Jewell College. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Harry M. Statham Sports Center.
 
Three different players had at least 12 points on the day for McKendree. Junior guard David Franklin (O'Fallon, IL/Althoff Catholic) showed the way in the balanced effort with 19 points. Junior forward Darin Winkelman (Steeleville, IL/Steeleville) chipped in with 18 points, 12 of which came in the second half. Winkelman also led McKendree with eight rebounds in the contest. Junior guard Michael Jackson (O'Fallon, IL/O'Fallon) helped out with 12 points and five rebounds for the Bearcats.
 
In the first half, the teams went toe-to-toe during the opening minutes. Quincy battled its way to a five-point advantage before McKendree fought back to knot the score twice, the last coming at 19-19 thanks to a lay-up from Jackson with 12:33 left in the period. The Hawks responded by reeling off the next nine points to take the lead for good at 28-19 just over a minute later.
 
The Bearcats clawed back once again and pulled within 33-30 on a three-pointer from Winkelman at the 7:49 mark before the hosts took control. Quincy closed the half on a 22-6 run to take a 55-36 lead into the locker room. A burst of 14 consecutive points over a four-minute stretch late in the half helped fueled the Hawks' run. Quincy pushed its lead to as many as 35 points in the second half before McKendree closed the game over the final nine minutes. The Bearcats outscored the hosts 22-6 over the final 9:36 of play.
 
Joseph Tagarelli and Evan McGaughey each posted a double-double for Quincy (10-4, 4-1 GLVC). Tagarelli paced the Hawks with 22 points while adding 11 rebounds. McGaughey connected for 12 points and hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds. Gogson Eneogwe contributed 19 points in the win for Quincy, while Von Washington and Jordan Wilson each scored 12 points. Herm Senor dished out a game-high eight assists for the Hawks, who scored 58 points in the paint.
