(HUDSONVILLE, Mich., Nov. 19) – The McKendree University women's hockey team upset No. 4 ranked Grand Valley State with a 3-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at Georgetown Ice Center in Hudsonville, Mich.
After falling 3-2 to Grand Valley State on Friday evening, the Bearcats bounced back and took a win over the Lakers. In the most recent rankings the American Collegiate Hockey Association had McKendree ranked No. 13 and Grand Valley State at No. 4.
After a scoreless first period the Bearcats, found the back of the net on an unassisted effort by freshman forward
Lara Wentz (Bismark, ND) just shy of four minutes into the second period. McKendree found the back of the net again in the second period on a goal by freshman forward Kiera Dietrich with the assist coming from Wentz. At the end of the second period the Bearcats held a 2-0 lead. Freshman forward
Allison Sauvola (Eagle River, WI/Northland Pines) continued the scoring for McKendree extending the lead to three. However, the Lakers eventually found the back of the net in the third period to cut the lead down to two. McKendree held Grand Valley State scoreless through the end of the period to take home the 3-1 victory.

Haylee Gannaway (Moreno Valley, CA/Rancho Verde) earned the win, stopping 42 of 43 shots on goal for a 0.977 save percentage. She now has an overall record of 5-4, with a 0.910 save percentage and a 2.82 goals-against average. Wentz had one goal and one assist for two points in the game, which gives her a team leading 11 goals along with four assists for 15 points. Dietrich netted her first career goal in the game, giving her one goal and five assists for six points on the season. Sauvola also netted a goal in the contest, her third of the season, along with two assists for five points on the year.
The Bearcats hit the ice again Sunday at 9:30 a.m. EST in Grand Rapids, Mich. At the Patterson Ice Center against No. 14 ranked Davenport University.
