Box Score 2 (KIRKSVILLE, Mo., March 13)- The McKendree University softball team salvaged a doubleheader split at Truman State University on Sunday with a extra inning rally and win in game two.
The Bearcats are now 8-14 overall and 2-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, and will host its home conference opening doubleheader on Saturday, March 19 agianst No. 7 University of Missouri-St. Louis at 12 p.m.
McKendree led 3-0 after two innings in game one, but the Bulldogs scored six unanswered runs over the next four innings to take game one 6-3. McKendree flashed some power early with three solo home runs in the first two innings.
Jamie Doggendorf (Dittmer, Mo./Northwest) put the Bearcats in front 1-0 with a homer in the first inning, before
Rachel Hastings (Forsyth, Ill./Maroa-Forsyth High School) and
Dani Schoenbacher (Tamaroa, Ill./Pinckeyville) each homered in the second inning to extend the lead to 3-0. Truman State started its rally in the second inning and cut the deficit to 3-1, before striking again in the third inning to come within 3-2. The Bulldogs scored two runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 6-3 lead and held on for the win.
Brooke Gajewski (Kronenwetter, Wis./D.C. Everest) fell to 1-5 overall with the loss.
Truman State appeared to be headed for a doubleheader sweep after hitting a solo homer in the sixth inning, but McKendree tied the game with a homer of its own in the seventh and added three more runs in the eighth to earn the 4-1 win.
Trailing 1-0 in the top of the seventh,
Rachel Hastings (Forsyth, Ill./Maroa-Forsyth High School) tied the game with a two-out homer. After the hosts failed to reach base in the bottom of the inning, the Bearcats took a 2-1 lead when
Kyla Haukap (Dawson, Ill./Buffalo Tri-City) scored on a throwing error by the second baseman. They added two more runs on a two-RBI single by
Samantha Cameron (Dix, Ill./Centralia, Ill.) to extend the lead to 4-1, and only allowed one base runner in the bottom of the eighth to earn the victory.
Holly Magre (Festus, Mo./St. Pius X) improved to 5-4 overall and had seven strikeouts in the win.
